Derwent Estuary

By Sandy Bay Infant School

This is a region of Hobart, Tasmania, called the Derwent Estuary.  Fresh water comes from the River Derwent starting near New Norfolk. The sea water comes from the Tasman sea and Southern Ocean.  The fresh water and salt water mix together here in the Estuary.

This is a storm water drain. There are eight storm water drains along Sandy Bay Beach. This water comes from Mt Wellington and Hobart city. Sometimes this water is dirty. Dirty water pollutes the estuary.

The web sites below relate to the River Derwent and  many projects relating to the water quality and sustainability. Recently   sewage pipes were replaced along Sandy Bay beach and other places in Hobart. The old pipes, some over 100 years old, were beginning to leak into the estaury.
