Glover Trail Painting

By Lansdowne Crescent Primary School

John Glover was an established artist in England, before he moved to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) to join his sons in 1831. He was 64 years old when he arrived in Hobart where he lived for the next year at Stanwell Hall, 166 Melville Street, West Hobart. John Glover captured the view of Hobart from Stanwell Hall in his painting Hobart Town-taken from the garden where I lived, 1832. He admired the Tasmanian bush and enjoyed walking on Knocklofty which was only a short distance from his home. In 1831 he painted some bushwalkers climbing the hill from Poet’s Road in his work, Hobart Town and River Derwent. John Glover is known as the father of Australian landscape painting.
