Knocklofty Reserve contains over 300 species of native plants. These grow in wet sclerophyll forests. There are several rare and threatened plant species in this area, including the Knocklofty Leek Orchid. When you stand facing Poet's Road, to the right is a dry sclerophyll forest and to the left is a wet forest. If you take some time to look closer, you may see some fungi and moss, or if you are lucky, some animals. There are three layers to the forests: The canopy: the leaves at the top of the trees. The mid ground: all the shrubs and small trees. The ground cover: the moss and fallen leaves. The bushcare group, Friends of Knocklofty, have planted thousands of native plants to help restore areas disturbed by quarrying, grazing and weed growth. Birds living in the Knocklofty Reserve include the Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Masked Owl, Yellow-throated Honeyeater, Swift Parrot and Wedge-tailed Eagle.
