Sandstone Quarry

By Lansdowne Crescent Primary School

Many of Hobart’s important buildings, as well as more humble cottages, were made with sandstone taken from Knocklofty. In the 1800s, there were numerous quarries on Knocklofty, the most important being on the eastern slopes. A builder called Rippon Shields is probably the most well-known of the quarry owners at that time and quarrying was a major industry. As you walk on Knocklofty, you will find numerous small quarries and borrow pits from this period. Gradually, suitable sandstone became more difficult to obtain and brickmaking took over as the major industry. The last well known building that was made from Knocklofty sandstone was St Mary’s Cathedral in Harrington Street.
